This May Day, over 100 local Frome residents are confirmed to 'Sing in the Spring' with their community in a traditional mass group singing event. Mayday Dawning will welcome in the Spring at dawn this bank holiday Monday by the neglected Saxonvale site.
Event: Mayday Dawning
6 am, Bank Holiday Monday, 1st May 2023, Saxonvale, Frome
The mass singing event will welcome the spring with a traditional May morning chorus of folk and popular songs to symbolise new beginnings in Saxonvale. The event is free and open to anyone who would like to attend, you do not need a ticket.
This beautiful celebration will be followed by other traditional May activities from 7am, including:
- Morris Dancing by Mr. Wilkins Shilling
- Music by Patrick Dunn's Folk Ensemble
- May Day flower garland making
- Hot cross buns, bacon butties, and hot drinks (vegan options available)
- and other May merriment
Damon Moore, Mayday Director said: "We are thrilled that so many people have signed up to sing with us at dawn and we look forward to more people attending on the day! We are very lucky to have Caroline Radclife who has put together a beautiful collection of songs and is very experienced in conducting large groups of people to sing.
"We all want Saxonvale to be a space for our community, not a high density housing estate - so what better to bring our community together in harmony, to show how much we care about the future of Saxonvale, and the hope for a new story for Frome to begin.
"Spring is all about new beginnings and transformations – a season that symbolises starting fresh and starting over. Now with the dawn of the new Somerset council, and as we have gained our outline planning permission, we are so much closer than we ever have been to realising the Mayday Plan for Saxonvale.
"Singing at dawn on May Day is a tradition that dates back over 500 years, Saxonvale is dripping in Frome's history, so to celebrate this together will be a truly wonderful and uplifting experience, I promise you that it is definitely worth getting out of bed for."
The Mayday Dawning event is free and singers are asked to meet at 5:45am at the Silk Mill, song sheets will be available on the day. You do not need a ticket to attend.
