Frome Nub News often does (and likes to do) local pet stories, even if they are not always positive.

So we were pleased to get a notice from the World Animal Foundation who said that in a recent article we had put the wrong, now outdated, figure for the number of cats in the UK.

We wrote there are "10.5 million" pet cats in here in the UK.

However the association said those are out of date figures, and according to their latest research and from data of 2023, there are 12 million pet cats in UK, accounting for 28% of all pets.

Interestingly, again according to those figures, the UK has the highest pet reptile population in the world - 2.2 million, whereas Russia has the second largest (1.1 million).

So that is 13 million dogs, 12 million cats, half a million pet pigeons, and 2.2 million reptiles.
