Close to a thousand people have signed a petition against the proposal to build a waste to heat incinerator in Westbury in less than 24 hours.

Last week the local council gave the go ahead to build a revised version of the £200m facility, in spite of widespread local opposition and it being opposed by the local MP.

Campaigners have now started an on-line petition to fight the plans which are also being referred to the Secretary of State.

They argue that the plant will have an impact far beyond Westbury, claiming there will be an additional 300 HGV's a day carrying waste into the town - some via Frome.

The company behind the plans say that the plant will create up to 45 jobs, but the next-door dairy plant, which also opposed the plans, indicated it may pull out of the area for health reasons and up to 250 jobs could be lost.

The plans from Northacre Energy were lodged in August 2020 and approved on June 22. The full details are under 20/06775/WCM on the Wiltshire Planning site.
