Police step up around Culver Hill in Frome today - but officers say public not at risk following axe attack

Police say that the wider public are not at risk following an axe attack in Frome and they have thanked the public who went to the victim's aid.

Officers were called at 9.10pm on Thursday 12 August by witnesses reporting an altercation involving four men, one of whom was armed with an axe.

Three men were reportedly attacking a fourth but made off from the scene in Feltham Drive past the Co-op store on Culver Hill. All involved were said to be white adults.

A man in his 30s was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

One man remains in police custody today, Friday 13 August, following his arrest last night.

Police add: " While our investigation is at an early stage, it appears this was a targeted incident and we don't believe there to be a risk to the wider community. "

The investigation continues and there will be an increased police presence in the area today as officers carry out their enquiries.

Officers added : "We're grateful to everyone who called to report the incident and especially those who went to help the injured man."
