Children at Vallis First School in Frome have been taking part in an interactive workshop with Jackdaws Music Trust before performing to the school.

Over the past few weeks, Jackdaws have been working with Saturn Class in Year 1 on their music project 'Year of Klezmer'. Klezmer is Jewish music that originated in Eastern Europe, in countries such as Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and Romania.

A hundred years ago these countries had big Jewish populations who spoke Yiddish and used to play klezmer for weddings and celebrations that involved a lot of dancing.

The children had fun playing instruments and dancing and really enjoyed working with the musicians. The Year 1 children then did a fantastic performance to the rest of the school showcasing all that they had learnt. All the children are really looking forward to working with Jackdaws Music Trust again soon!

Jackdaws, based from Mells, brings together world class musicians and school children in the South West, through award-winning Education projects such as 'Year of …', 'Song Story' and 'OperaPLUS'.
