Rare - and unpredictable - night shining skies over Frome

By Susie Watkins 24th Jun 2021

A rare sight in the skies over Frome last night (June 23)

Thank you to star gazer Mike Read who took these photos of

Noctilucent clouds, which translates as night shining clouds.

These "clouds" are formation of tiny ice crystals in the uppermost atmosphere at around 76-85km (which is called the mesosphere), they are visible a few hours after sunset and a few hours before sunrise and only last for a short while and are unpredictable as to when you see them.

According to photographer Mike Read at this time of year, anytime between 11pm and 12:30am could be a good time – looking towards the north west to north. They typically appear in summer and only between higher latitudes .
