Residents organise meeting to discuss implication of proposed residents Parking Scheme for the Trinity Area of Frome
Due to the knock-on effect of the Weymouth Road residents' scheme, residents in the Trinity area have now also been sent letters asking them to sign up for a similar scheme.
Although Weymouth Road now lies empty; as the majority of residents there have off-road parking; the Trinity area is very different. The roads are narrower and most houses don't have access to private off-road parking.
The majority of people commute out of town to work and there is currently insufficient parking for the number of people living in this area.
A resident of the Trinity area said: "The parking problems are mainly in the evening when people return from work, so I don't understand how a residents' scheme is going to help with that. It would make sense to put a halt to the Weymouth Road scheme and for the Badcox Car Park to be free again for residents, as it used to be."
Although some people may believe that paying for a resident's permit will guarantee them parking, this is not the case. In fact, the introduction of yellow lines will reduce the available parking, and people will pay for the privilege of fighting over the remaining spaces. (Permits currently priced at £60 for the first car, and £100 for the second car, and £60 for a visitors permit).
It is also not clear if this were to go ahead, if residents would be restricted to parking in their own street, or would have access to the whole parking area outlined on the map. (See attached).
In response to a petition to stop the residents' scheme on Weymouth Road, which was signed by 456 people, Somerset County Council stated "We are currently preparing a series of town wide parking reviews. The Frome parking review will provide an opportunity for all residents, businesses, and other interested parties to provide feedback on what changes (if any) should be considered across their immediate area and Frome as a hold (sic). The Frome review will be launched later this year." The group questions why the Trinity area scheme is being proposed now, before the town wide parking review has been completed.
Although the Parking Services Manager Steve Deakin has been invited to the next Frome Town Council meeting on the 16th November - this is too late to inform local residents of the implications of the scheme - the consultation letter needs to be signed and returned by the 14th November.
Therefore, the resident's group have organised a public meeting at Frome town hall on Monday 24th October at 7pm, and are inviting anyone who lives in the Trinity area, Weymouth Road and the surrounding roads to come along to the meeting, to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the scheme. Frome Town, District and County Councillors have also been invited.
