Rodden Road bridge repairs : There was more work than we thought say Network Rail

More reinforcement needed : That is the reason given by Network Rail for extending the closure of a key bridge in Frome.

Rodden Road under the railway bridge has been closed to cars since November 2 (although it is now open for people to walk through). Works were scheduled to finish on the bridge on December 12.

The road is a key route up to the hospital and for buses to Frome College from that side of town, so they were all diverted, many having to drive across the town centre.

As critics pointed out the Network Rail work was initially scheduled for 40 days and 40 nights.

But late last week that deadline was missed and the closure has now been extended until the end of January 2021.

A Network Rail spokesperson said:

"During recent work to Rodden Road overbridge in Frome, our engineers uncovered areas of the bridge that require further reinforcement.

"In the interest of efficiency, Network Rail has agreed with Frome Parish Council to continue its work on the overbridge until 31 January 2021. This will mean the road will remain closed until the work has been completed with the same diversion route for vehicles as before and pedestrians will continue to have access under the bridge via a safe route through the worksite.

"A letter has been sent to local residents providing further details of this work including a map of the diversion route and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this time."
