Somerset County Council is thanking everyone who pulled together after torrential rain hit the Chard area on Monday (June 28) night.

Flash flooding caused by extreme weather saw the emergency services and council teams – backed by community volunteers – on the scene throughout the night. Fire crews rescued two people from a car in floodwater while other vehicles were marooned after flood water swept through the area.

Teams from Somerset County Council's Highways worked throughout the night and are continuing to clear mud and debris from affected roads. All main routes are now clear of flooding but significant damage has damage has been caused to some local roads making them impassable. Crews are continuing to assess the widespread storm damage and plan repairs.

Councillor John Woodman, County Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: "I would like to thank everyone involved for their tireless efforts in dealing with such an exceptional event. I understand this is awful for those communities who have been affected.

"This was extreme weather with torrential rain hitting the area and causing flash-flooding. Teams from the emergency services, Somerset County Council and the district council – not to mention volunteers and the community – did an incredible job and we will now assess the damage and make any repairs as quickly as we can. "I would like to thank everyone for their patience and support."

As of 11am June 29 there were still closures in Whitestaunton and Scrapton Lane, Combe St Nicholas.
