Somerset residents have been advised to prepare for potential snow and ice this week, with two Met Office warnings in place – though it may be wise to manage expectations about waking up to a winter wonderland.

The first yellow weather warning comes into effect from 5pm today (January 6) and will remain in place until 10am tomorrow (January 7). It covers much of Somerset, excluding the northern coastline, with the Met Office warning of icy stretches on roads and a risk of injuries from slips and falls.

However, the likelihood of widespread snow remains low, with any accumulations expected to be minor. The Met Office stated: "Frequent sleet or snow showers are expected, producing a few centimetres above 200 metres, with a small chance of greater than 5cm at higher elevations in Wales. Temporary accumulations of up to 2cm are possible at lower levels but are unlikely to last long."

A second warning has been issued for Wednesday, January 8, from 9am until midnight, covering most of the county, including areas south of Bridgwater and Wells.

This alert suggests a slight chance of up to 5cm of snow at lower levels and as much as 10cm over higher ground.

The Met Office has also advised residents to be prepared for potential impacts, including:

  • A small chance of power cuts and disruptions to services such as mobile phone coverage.
  • A slight chance of rural communities becoming cut off, particularly in upland areas.
  • Possible travel delays on roads, with a risk of stranded vehicles and passengers.
  • Delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.

While the warnings highlight possible travel disruption and isolated power cuts, any significant snowfall is expected to be limited to higher ground and rural areas.

The Met Office has reminded residents to take care on untreated roads and pavements and to prepare for potential minor travel delays. As always, weather conditions can change quickly, so keeping an eye on forecasts is recommended.
