Four candidates are fighting it out for the privilege of representing the people of Somerton and Frome for potentially the next five years.

The seat has been held by Conservative candidate David Warburton since 2015, and he was returned with an increased majority in 2017.

The Greens, Labour and Liberal Democrats are all fielding candidates in what is being dubbed "the Brexit election".

The full list of candidates for the seat has been published after the deadline for nominations passed at 4pm yesterday (November 14).

The candidates standing are as follows:

Dr Andrea Dexter (Green)

Sean Dromgoole (Labour)

David Warburton (Conservative)

Somerton and Frome was not included on an agreed list of 60 seats in which the Greens, Lib Dems or Plaid Cymru would not compete against each other, as part of the Unite to Remain pact.

All four candidates live in the constituency, though only two have provided precise addresses – Mr Boyden, who lives in Frome, and Sean Dromgoole, who resides in Langport.

Mr Dromgoole stood in the 2017 election and finished third out of five candidates – though he did increase Labour's share of the vote by around ten per cent.

He has tweeted in support of Labour's policy of nationalising Openreach to provide "free broadband" to residents, describing it as "genius" – though he also admitted he "had no idea this was coming".

Dr Dexter has spoken out against the government's record of austerity, tweeting on Wednesday (November 13): "14 million people living in poverty in the UK, and 1.5 million children live in households that cannot afford to heat their homes.

"This is not 1819, it is 2019 in the world's fifth largest economy."

Lib Dem candidate Adam Boyden – who also sits on Mendip District Council – said residents should "demand better" from their local MP.

In a video posted on the Somerton and Frome Lib Dems' Twitter feed, he said: "Ever since I was young, I've had this burning sense of wanting to fight injustice.

"It's probably from my family – from my dad being disabled. I can see the world differently when you don't have the opportunities to enjoy life as everyone else does. We need to help put that right for people."

Mr Warburton has responded to the recent flooding in the north of England by calling on the government to secure the future funding of the Somerset Rivers Authority.

He tweeted: "Somerset desperately needs the provisions in my Rivers Authority Bill to be taken up by government and included in government legislation asap. This is urgent for us now."

Defra minister Rebecca Pow – who is standing for the Conservatives in the Taunton Deane constituency – gave assurances yesterday that the government was looking into the issue.

She said: "This government will find a way of ensuring that they will be able to continue doing their work.

"A way around it will be found and options are being looked at."
