The paranormal investigation community is reeling from the news of the imminent closure of Shepton Mallet Prison, widely regarded as the UK's top haunted hotspot.

Ghost hunter Tony Ferguson, a prominent figure on TikTok, shared his deep dismay over the closure scheduled for January 2024. Shepton Mallet Prison, the world's oldest purpose-built prison, has been a focal point for ghost hunters since ceasing its prison operations in 2013.

The site, formerly housing notable inmates like the Kray twins, is reputed to be "the world's most haunted prison," with a history steeped in torture, executions, and secret burial grounds.

"I first visited back in 2017 with fellow investigator Paul Cissell where we caught some very interesting captures which made me want to return to find out more about what was going on in this overwhelming location," Ferguson said. He recounted numerous paranormal encounters at the prison, including capturing a full apparition, witnessing a team member collapsing in agony, and observing mysterious phenomena like doors slamming and objects moving inexplicably.

"For me as an investigator who has visited many haunted locations throughout the UK I cannot stress how disappointed I am, as is the paranormal community, that this location will be closing its doors for the last time in the New Year."

"Shepton Mallet to me is the number one location in the UK as it always leaves me walking away scratching my head. It will always hold a special place in my heart as it has never let me down and always delivers," he added.

The closure, announced by Cove Group, the prison's operator, follows a breakdown in relations with City & Country, the owner of the building. The prison is expected to remain open to visitors until its closing date in January 2024.
