Police have explained why they were in the skies above Frome on Sunday night and why armed officers were in the town at the same time.

They were called in due to a member of the public believing that they had seen someone with a firearm.

There was a lot of speculation on social media, in particular about the amount of time the helicopter was circling the town. It may have been circling at around 1225 ft but many in Frome said they, and their pets were going mad with the noise. As you can see from the flight radar tracking, the circling, over Whatcombe fields and around the town, meant the helicopter going for many loops before it was stood down at around half past eight.

The police told Nub News that : " At about 7pm yesterday (Sunday 2 October), a member of the public reported seeing two people in the Hill Ground area of Frome, with what appeared to be a firearm.

"Firearms officers were deployed due to the nature of information received, as well as the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter.

"Officers were able to identify two males as being involved in this incident. A BB gun was subsequently seized from a property in the town.

"Both males have since been spoken to and given words of advice. "
