Among the local memories of the Queen, one stuck out for older residents of Frome. She DID visit Frome, but only on her way back from visiting the Royal Bath and West show to take the royal train back to London.

The lovely photo emerged of children waving at her as she went past what is now Gorehedge in Frome, on her way, with Prince Philip back to the station.

One person posted that they had stood opposite Crown Tours, which was at the time the local coach company, with Wesley School waving their little union jack flag.

The Queen's was a regular visitor to the Bath & West show, her first visit was back in 1948, four years before she became Queen. At this time the Royal Bath & West Show was a travelling show, and the then Princess Elizabeth visited it at its venue for that year, Cardiff.

In 1966 she visited the show at its new permanent home at the Bath & West Showground. This was the second year in which the show had been held in Shepton Mallet, having moved there in 1965.

Again almost 20 years passed until the Queen's last visit to the Show, which she made in 1985. After that the Royal Bath & West Show has enjoyed visits from the Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall (now King Charles III and the Queen Consort), and the Countess of Wessex.

The Crown Tours business was passed on to to C H Field Ltd., in Paulton in July 1982. Wesley Infants' and Junior School, which opened in 1924, closed in 1973.
