A huge fire is underway with a total of four engines in the location with local residents advised by the fire crews to keep their doors and windows closed.

The fire headquarters advised all locals in the area of Bector Lane/Burnthouse Lane in Stoke St Michael to stay indoors and shut all doors and windows.

Two fire engines from Shepton Mallet and a water carrier from Yeovil were initially sent to a report of a barn alight at Burnt House Lane in Stoke St Michael.

On arrival the crews requested the attendance of another fire engine as they needed more water. This was sent from Frome.

The barn measures approximately 50m x 20m and contains fertiliser and straw. A specialist hazardous materials officer is also in attendance due to the involvement of the fertiliser and an environmental protection unit from Taunton is en route.

Two breathing apparatus wearers with two firefighting jets are currently (April 13) at work attacking the fire involving fertiliser and around 32 tonnes of straw.

Another fire engine has recently been requested to attend as the crews needed more breathing apparatus sets, this has been sent from Frome.
