The Department of the Environment has published a nationwide report into littering in the UK - the first ever of its kind.

Rubbish was collected and listed by the Keep Britain Tidy team - and the results may not be altogether surprising.

Cigarette butts made up the vast majority of litter items (66%) when examining litter in terms of their numbers, but only 0.2% of overall litter volume.

But if the litter is listed in terms of volume small plastic bottles and non-alcoholic cans together make up 43% of the volume of all litter, while only comprising 3% of the litter item count.

Then again perhaps not something to surprise the litter pickers of Frome the brand items that make up the greatest proportion of litter in terms of total count are, in order of appearance, McDonald's emerging most frequently, followed by Coca-Cola, and Wrigley's Extra chewing gum packaging.

The report - called Tackling Litter can be found here:

the DEFRA blog site

In 2018 to 2019, local authorities spent £698,819,000 on street cleaning but only 58% of the public reported that they thought they were doing a good job.
