Frome neighbourhood police have issued an unusual appeal : They want to find out why someone is posting money through letterboxes in the town.

But tracking down the good Samaritan, who is also reported to be posting letters to people he wants to help, has perplexed the community.

What the police know is that he is male and he has posted sums of money and letters through doors in the community.

The Frome Neighbourhood Policing Team said: " We are keen to speak to this male and ascertain the reasoning behind this act.

"If you have any information about this male or have experienced anything similar, please contact the Police on 101."

One post on social media expressed surprise and disappointment that such a kindly act was being viewed with suspicion.

The writer said : " So sad that this act of kindness and generosity is deemed suspicious. Why does this person need to be found? True philanthropy is charitable acts without the need for recognition. What a strange world we live in when people are afraid of someone doing something kind."

It is not known where or when the money was given out but last week (February 17) it was National Random Acts of Kindness Day.
