There were some quite amazing things at the weekend's Frome market, but tucked away in the Magpie Market inside the Cheese & Grain, was something we thought quite remarkable.

Artist Cathy Plummer has been working of making embroidered maps of the town, sewn into fabric, with a combination of machine and hand stitching.

Because they are EXACT replicas and to scale of real maps, they are both a piece of art, a piece of history and they can also tell a story. For example her biggest piece still has the space unsewn where the Printworks are going to be in Frome.

Cathy explained: "I have done one for my son, he lives by the beach and they were doing a little lockdown walk, so I made that as his map, sewing in the places he stopped. The beer sign for the pub they go to, fish in the sea, so it is like a picture to show his local walk and then I did one for my daughter in Frome, from my house to her house, because it goes through The Dippy. With little dogs to show the walk."

Each piece takes weeks for Cathy, who is a former arts teacher, because she is scrupulous at making the maps acccurate.

She explained: " What really took the time, was to keep comparing my work to the actual maps to make sure it was all true to the map and I had not missed a bit. It is as near as I can get to a real map, but around Frome some of the paths are on some maps and not on others. "

Her aim is to take commissions from Frome residents for custom pieces, your journey from home to your favourite pub or dog walk... anything is possible and the work is amazing.

As for the big Frome map, she told Nub News: " I would be happy for it to be on display. But what I would most like is for people to ask me to do their map, with parts of Frome with little buildings on it, which mean something to them. I am hoping to be able to sew their story."
