Frome Nub News aims to be supportive to every element of the town's community from business and shops to people and charities and clubs and sports organisations.
Everyone is finding it tough at the moment and is desperate to get back to normal.
We are profiling some of these local businesses and groups regularly over coming weeks in a feature called UP CLOSE IN FROME in the hope that we can be a supportive springboard for their full return to business as usual.
This week: Lux Films a Frome-based company bold, slick and imaginative and pre-coronavirus, working all over the world.
So first of all we asked founder Andrew Fowler how the company began?
I worked with my co-founders Gareth Lowdnes and Mark Woodhead within film, theatre, television and events for a little over four years at other production company after all working in TV and production previously (for some, over 20 years previously but we won't mention ages!).
In 2016, we decided to set off on our own and specialise in video production of events, product launches, marketing and highlights videos. This has since built so much that we now hire local camera operators, editors and production assistants are now working with LuxFilms on projects throughout the year.
Why did you start the company?
We started to see how important video was becoming for brands online and for their internal use but that a lot of videos made for businesses was very boring and corporate looking. This felt really counter-intuitive given that video is the ideal way to grab people's attention. We really enjoyed working together as a team as we all have very different skills and creative ideas that just seem to mould well together and felt that there was a gap in the market, that we could potentially fill.
We think videos, whatever the content, can and should look and feel bold, slick and original. We pride ourselves on knowing how to achieve the perfect mix of strategy, creativity, technology and production to achieve value for businesses.
And who have you worked with?
We have worked with some big brands and organisations such as BBC, Herbalife Nutrition, EY, Haringey Huskies Ice Hockey, Veeam. We are often asked to attend events abroad as well as in the UK so that their events for clients, customers and staff are recorded and then made into highlights videos, product launches and marketing videos. Personally for the team, getting the opportunity to film in places such as Patagonia, Macchu Pichu and Singapore has been an absolute privilege. We were asked by a client to produce an opening video for an event that was being held at the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore so we came up with the idea of basing it on the infamous Formula 1 Grand Prix night race that is held there every year. Using green screens and a Scalextric track we transported staff members into being an F1 driver, pit crew or part of the crowd. It was a lot of fun and really made something different for the client that they loved, who wouldn't want to be an F1 driver like Jenson Button eh?It's projects like that, that we thrive on because we love to be different.
How hard has it been for Lux during coronavirus?
We've been pretty lucky given the current situation. We have had regular clients and new ones ask us to provide them with not only video content but to run their events on the fully-functioning virtual event platform that we developed soon after the lockdown began.
This has meant that we have been able to make sure their normal events they have in their calendars can still go ahead, but online. We have enjoyed coming up with concepts and ideas that are just as effective and punchy as they would have been if the event was in person, as well as virtually holding the hands of our clients that for most, this is a completely new experience.
This situation can, and indeed has meant, that a lot of people have been cut off from things that they love, so if we can be part of something that allows them to still interact with a passion or interest, then that is hugely gratifying.
Of course, it's not all been plain sailing for everyone in our industry and we have been sad to see how badly affected others have been hit during the pandemic. We stand in solidarity with the #WeMakeEvents movement and hope that there is a way for those professionals and teams to get back doing what they love and are brilliant at, or extra support is provided so that the industry isn't affected permanently, because with an industry worth £39.1 billion to the economy it is vital that a way is found.
And looking ahead to the future?
For us, we are fully prepared for the fact that online, virtual events may become part of the norm, even when other live events are back too.
So keeping on top of new technologies and methods that would help our production team and clients is really important. However, we do really look forward to a time where we can do more in-person filming as well, as we love working in new locations and meeting other people, albeit in smaller groups of people then we are used too.
We would love to work with more local companies in Somerset as well and prove that you don't need London based production companies in order to get professional and high-quality videos.
