Frome has gone into effective lockdown tonight following Prime Minister Boris Johnson's nationwide TV broadcast in which he laid down stringent new rules in a bid to battle coronavirus.

With the total number of confirmed cases in Somerset currently at 15, although with very few cases now being tested, the county has now been commercially frozen.

All non- essential businesses, if they haven't already, will be forced to close.

In his public address, the PM said:

  • All gatherings of more than two people in public are banned- so no weddings and baptisms
  • All non-essential shops will have to close
  • Communal play and exercise areas inside parks are to be shut down, but not parks themselves
  • Only essential travel on roads, trains and buses will be allowed.

Anyone breaking the rules will be fined at least £30 - and up to £1,000 if they fail to self-isolate.
