With love Frome me to you, Paul McCartney thrills Frome Cheese & Grain crowd with a pound a song pre Glastonbury

By Susie Watkins 25th Jun 2022

It will be talked about in Frome for as long as he has been a legend.

When Sir Paul McCartney rocked up at the Cheese & Grain to try out a few numbers ahead of becoming the oldest headliner in the history of the Glastonbury Festival, even super fans were not totally confident he could rock it.

But for twenty five songs for a £25 ticket, if you were lucky enough to get one, any doubts that this was rock and roll royalty, it was worth every penny and some.

If you were there it was a blistering set in sweltering heat interspersed with quips about his life in music. " It reminds me of playing The Cavern" said Sir Paul who had to mop himself down on several occasions. " Not that we (the Beatles) minded, as the roof dripped onto us playing. But the amps did keep blowing."

Eighty years old, but not showing his age, graceful to the crew, forgiving of the basic light show, Paul McCartney thrilled with old belters (and if you didn't sing along with Hey Jude shame on you) and some newer tracks, even a Frome first. A moving tribute to his wife Nancy who was in the crowd, along with many other A listers including director Sam Taylor Johnson, and her husband actor Aaron who met on set when he was playing John Lennon in Nowhere Boy.

Something for everyone Sir Paul said on arriving on the small cramped set, which left his backing horns, joyfully competing with the side curtains. " Are you ready to have some fun Frome?"

Die hard fans, old rockers, guitar groupies and quite a few children just along for the ride, who will doubtless tell their children and grandchildren about the day they saw a legend in their local.

Sweat, lots of tears and an absolute were you there moment tale to tell for years to come for Frome, even if he has given the town a new name.

We are now Frome-onians, according to Macca, who seemed to enjoy himself as much as the 800 strong crowd.
