Frome 300 year old oak tree to be cut down

Dear editor,

I have recently been informed of the intention to cut down an extremely old oak tree, in my neighbourhood.

The tree is situated in Westwood Drive, Frome and has been quietly standing there for over 300 years , but now is in danger of being cut down by Somerset Council because it's too expensive to do the alternative work to enable it not to damage nearby properties.

I expect that most of Frome can remember the last beautiful tree that was cut down, near the train station, last year because of similar issues, which caused the insurance company to apply for it to be felled, because of the extensive extra costs needed to do the work needed to enable the tree to stay and repair the damage it caused to the property next to it .

I want as many people as possible to be aware of this threat to a wonderful tree which we have the responsibility to save for future generations to come. I feel it is an integral part of the community and part of the reason people have wanted to live in the location

If any of the readers wish to voice their concerns, please contact the Somerset Council planning department, which I have done myself.

Thank you
