An Evening with Frank Bruno

Cheese and Grain Frome

UNTIL Wednesday 24th November

We are thrilled to announce a former world champion and British boxing icon to the Cheese and Grain. An Evening with Frank Bruno comes to Frome. The night will feature a candid interview with the legendary fighter, as-well as an audience Q & A. Bruno was a legendary knockout artist competing from 1982 to 1996, his opponents included top-rated heavyweights of his era such as Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis.

Growing up with five brothers and sisters in a terraced London house, Frank started boxing at age 9 at the local Wandsworth Boys Club. He learned to box seriously while at Oak Hall School in Sussex, an establishment for 'problem' children. The London born athlete was an icon and role model to young fighting fans across the country and remains beloved by his fans to this day.

The pinnacle of his career was defeated Oliver McCall at a jam-packed Wembley Stadium in 1995 to become the first British WBC Heavyweight title of the 20th century. Britain rallied behind Bruno as he toured through London with the winning belt on an open top bus that drew hundreds of thousands of fans to cheer and wave at Frank.

Bruno has remained a popular celebrity with the British public following his retirement from boxing, he spoke honestly about his struggles with mental health after being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in 2003. His well-documented illness put Frank in the public eye, he uses this media attention to help with the stigma attached to mental health and to help raise the standards of care given to those suffering with mental health issue
