After what was described as a "tumultuous" week, Frome Town Matters

By Susie Watkins 10th Feb 2021

The regular Frome Town Matters meeting referred to what has been a "tumultous" week in regards to the town's relationship with Mendip District Council.

Councillors were told that there was a lot of bad feeling with Mendip, and Cllr Maxine Crawley conceded that communications between the two organisations needed some improvement.

She also told the meeting, that as yet there was no update on the Easthill development, but that when there was, Frome Town Council would be immediately informed.

The site adjacent to the cemetery, is owned by Mendip and is under consideration for development.

Meantime councillors listened while an email was read out from Mendip leader Cllr Ros Wyke who wrote that some "real" progress was being made on the transfer of The Boyle Cross to Frome. Again no date was offered for when this will be completed.

Also brought before the meeting on Zoom the campaign to protect and establish the footpath at The Retreat in Frome is coming to the Mendip Planning Board next week as part of the plans for developing the land there. It will be discussed on February 17.

In a tongue in cheek comment the councillor who shared the link added " Showing Handforth how it's done ! Hopefully."

The new resilience officer Nikki Brain introduced herself to the meeting with an outline on the new Green and Healthy Futures programme, a combined health and community project which is being funded by a National Lottery climate grant of £299.677.

There will be seven different but interlinked projects, on how climate and health are interconnected and how the town can get involved.

A collaboration of Edventure, Frome Town Council and the Frome health centre, those will be involving the town in ideas for improving health over the next two years.

It will be building on Mendip's Health Connections and training 200 green community connectors within Frome to promote actions which are good for them and their families AND the planet.

There will also be an annual conference on how healthy community is connected to a healthy climate.

One other item discussed at the meeting was the ongoing proposal to close King Street in Frome to through traffic.

Cllr Paul Horton told the meeting : " We need to talk more about this. Maybe we could try a live consultation ? It is an important proposal, we need to move forward on it."

With Network Rail currently working on the bridge into Rodden Meadow, one of the councillors told of how difficult and dangerous it is walking up via North Parade.

The meeting was told that the council has approached Network Rail with worries about the safety of this alternative walking route and the response from them was essentially given in one word : " tough."
