Avon and Somerset among the worst-hit regions for dating scams

Avon and Somerset has been ranked among the top ten regions in the UK for romance and dating scams, with over 1,000 reports submitted to Action Fraud in the past five years.

New data from Action Fraud Claims Advice reveals that nearly 40,000 cases of dating scams were reported across the UK between January 2020 and December 2024, with victims losing an estimated £400 million. Avon and Somerset was among the worst-affected areas, averaging over 200 reports per year.

Scam reports on the rise

Action Fraud data shows that reports of romance fraud have increased in the region over time, despite national figures declining after pandemic restrictions lifted.

  • 2020: 203 reports
  • 2021: 210 reports
  • 2022: 219 reports
  • 2023: 211 reports
  • 2024: 240 reports (highest on record)

This brings the total number of reported dating scams in Avon and Somerset to 1,083 cases, making it the ninth-highest region out of 48 areas included in the study.

Police warning to online daters

Avon and Somerset Police have urged residents to remain cautious when dating online, as scammers continue to target victims in the region.

A police spokesperson said: "Romance fraud is an incredibly cruel crime that preys on trust and loneliness. Scammers often spend weeks or even months building relationships with their victims before making financial requests under false pretences. We are urging people to be vigilant when talking to new contacts online. Never send money to someone you haven't met in person, and always question any requests for financial help—no matter how convincing they may seem."

How to protect yourself from dating scams

Police and fraud experts recommend the following tips to stay safe when dating online:

  • Never send money to someone you have only met online.
  • Be wary of individuals who move quickly in a relationship and try to gain trust too soon.
  • Check for inconsistencies in their stories and look out for generic photos or profiles with little personal information.
  • Speak to friends or family if you're unsure about someone's intentions.
