Severe Weather Protocol activated to support rough sleepers
Somerset Council has activated its Severe Weather Emergency Provision (SWEP) to provide emergency accommodation for rough sleepers during the current severe weather conditions.
SWEP is triggered when temperatures are forecast to drop to 0°C or below, but it can also be activated during extreme weather events such as heatwaves, high winds, or flooding. The aim is to prevent harm or loss of life by ensuring those sleeping rough have access to safe shelter.
The Outreach Team is actively contacting rough sleepers across Somerset to encourage them to use the emergency accommodation available. Additional support will also be offered to those who continue to sleep rough during this period.
How to access emergency accommodation
Rough sleepers in Somerset can check their eligibility and access emergency accommodation by calling:
- 0300 123 22 24 (during office hours)
- 0300 123 23 27 (out of office hours)
It is advised to call as early as possible to ensure access to suitable accommodation.
If you are concerned about someone sleeping rough in Somerset, you can refer them for support via StreetLink.
