Central Frome cafe : We roll with coronavirus changes but I can't carry on forever

The sign says they have the best breakfasts in Frome - and there was certainly a steady stream of customers - clearly regulars - who love the food.

But it is a real labour now for those meals with the owner and manager of the Market Cross Cafe also the cook, the washer upper and the waitress.

In these tough times of coronavirus Kay Wilkins is doing what she can to keep going - and that means doing it all herself, so no additional staff.

When Nub News caught up with Kay, who has been running the cafe for seven years, the government had just announced another change which will impact coffee shops.

Kay told us: " But here customers aren't coming in just to sit and have a coffee. If they want to sit down they will have to go outside with our tables outside. Inside we are serving customers, but only to eat."

Kay admitted it was a struggle to keep up with the latest coronavirus regulations and added: " We have followed the guidelines from the start, so we know how to protect ourselves and our customers. What we can and cannot do. I am now working on my own, I can't take any people on. It was hard but I had to make that decision because I cannot afford to pay staff."

Kay describes her popular cafe as an Eat and Go type of place and her customers clearly love it but she admits business is tough.

" It is very hard right now, but it is hard for every business right now. I just don't know how the government is going to help businesses.. how it is going to help people like us. We still have to pay the same rates as usual but we are not able to make as much. Now we are being told this will go until 2021. I support the government but just hope my business can survive (that long)."

Kay tells us that she can carry on, working incredibly hard, and covering the bills - but not forever.

The Market Cross Cafe is usually open seven days a week and usually open from 7am. But now Kim is only open six days a week and closing up earlier.

" I don't know what the future will be but like everybody I have to do the best I can. Rather than shut down...I have to do this... it is hard but I don't have a choice.

" I don't know what the answer is. I am not doing too badly because I am doing it all myself, but I can't do this forever. I am not going to be a hero."
