Keeping Frome Town Centre clean and welcoming came up for debate at the main council meeting (February 22).

The company which cleans the town centre is contracted by Mendip, and there are no plans for what happens when staff are on holiday or off sick.

Cllr Nick Dove told the meeting that as the council spearheads a campaign to revitalise the Town Centre, it is important that it is welcoming to visitors and businesses. " If you you have vomit on the church steps and rubbish on the pavements " what message is this sending. "

The contract for cleaning services in Frome is up for renewal in November.

But it is less clear what happens, when Mendip is brought under the single control of a unified Somerset - and who takes responsibility for such contracts from April.

Cllr Mel Usher, who represents the market centre of town said: " When responsibility moves to Taunton the state of Frome is clearly not going be high on their priority list. " He suggested moving cleaning services in house.

Another issued raised at the town council meeting, immediately after the no-confidence vote in Frome MP David Warburton were the new digital crossing lights across from Iceland. They currently do not have any noise to tell less-able users, when and when not to cross and remain silent.

" Odd and wrong," agreed Cllr Dove. The matter is being raised before Somerset.
