This May Day, Mayday Saxonvale are inviting the people of Frome to 'Sing in the Spring' with their community in a traditional mass group singing event, Mayday Dawning, at 6 am bank holiday Monday by the neglected Saxonvale site.
The event will welcome in the spring with a traditional May morning chorus of folk and popular songs to symbolise new beginnings in Saxonvale. Everyone is welcome to join the event and sing. Come on your own or as a group, many local choirs have signed up.
This beautiful celebration will be followed by other traditional May activities including morris dancing, garland making, refreshments, music, and other May merriment from 7 am - 11 am. Anyone can attend this event even if they do not want to sing (or wake up as early!).
Damon Moore, Mayday Director said: "We have all sat by and watched the Saxonvale site remain empty and neglected for many years. We believe this site could be such an incredible asset for our town if developed with the right scheme.
"Spring is all about new beginnings and transformations – a season that symbolises starting fresh and starting over. This is what we all want for Saxonvale. Now we have our outline planning permission we are so much closer than we ever have been to realising the Mayday Plan for Saxonvale. This event will bring our community together in harmony to show how much we care about our town, our Saxonvale, and the hope for a new story to begin.
"We appreciate it may be an early start for many, however singing at dawn on May Day is a tradition that dates back over 500 years. It's very uplifting and quite moving, and an experience that is definitely worth getting out of bed for."
There will be a public rehearsal along with a video and song lyrics available once people have signed up to learn the songs prior to the day.
The Mayday Dawning event is free and singers are asked to meet at 5:45 am at the Silk Mill. For more information and to sign up please visit: maydaysaxonvale.co.uk/dawn
