The blaze at the former Greencore factory site in Evercreech yesterday (January 4) is suspected of having been an arson attack.

Just after 1.30pm, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Control received numerous calls to smoke issuing from the site, deploying appliances from Castle Cary, Shepton Mallet, Wincanton, Wells and Street, along with the Incident Command Unit from Street and the Incident Support Unit from Martock.

To extinguish the fire crews used four breathing apparatus, two main jets, one safety jet, hydraulic spreaders and two positive pressure ventilation fans.

It took just under two hours for crews to bring the fire under control and there were no injuries reported.

A teenager will be interviewed by police at a later date, in connection with the incident.

In a statement issued, police said: "If you have any information which could aid our investigation, please call 101 and quote reference 52223002193 ."

The factory closed in October 2018 at a cost of around 400 jobs and the site has been identified within the council's Local Plan for employment use.
