A Frome mum (and grandmum) has been nominated for a special award in honour of her decades of fundraising for her late son and raising awareness about the tragedy of those who die at a young age of sudden cardiac death.

Shirley Wort has been nominated for Fundraiser of the Year Award at BBC Somerset Radio.

We met Shirley at her final fundraising screening day at Oakfield on behalf of the charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) .

She and her family worked for over 20 years to get youngsters screened in memory of her son.

Julian Wort was just 28 when he died suddenly from a previously undiagnosed heart condition in March 2000. The screening took place in March at Julian's former school, Oakfied Academy and marked an official 'end' to the work for the charity, but a

Athough Shirley is standing down after raising thousands and thousands for the charity, the fundraising page is still open.

Shirley told Nub News : " We were surprised to receive the phone call to say we had been nominated and shortlisted, and feel very excited and humbled to be going to the awards ceremony in September. "

Julian's Memorial Fund and web page will remain at CRY as a lasting legacy, and anyone can still donate to the cause HERE www.c-r-y.org.uk/julian-wort

This will go to CRY's doctors' research programme.
