Fair Frome, along with many charities and food organisations across the UK have been told that families in Frome have also been given poor quality free school meal hampers.

Social media has reacted with outrage to a photo posted from one mother, who has not revealed where she is based, at the food included in a package reportedly three days worth.

That has led to calls for a national investigation on who is supplying the groceries and what they have invested.

According to the legal advocacy firm the Good Law Project, the provision of these meals was contracted out – in this case to Chartwells - a company owned by the catering giant Compass Group. The have said that the photo does not represent what the put in their supplies.

The Good Law project say that the government paid £44 per box to private contractors for the food that has been supplied to families who are usually in receipt of free school meals.

Fair Frome has today said that they want to see families being given shopping vouchers rather than the hampers offered under the scheme.

They have posted : " We are already hearing from schools in Frome of the very poor quality of Free School Meals food hampers and pressure to accept contract rather than vouchers. We are looking at ways we can help now. Vouchers allow families to shop with choice and dignity."
