Mendip District Council has partnered with a key transport company to deliver a purpose-built Logistics Training Academy that will drive investment and growth across the wider local area.

The Academy, to be based at Willmotts Transport, will offer training and employment, plus apprenticeships and reskilling opportunities. It's hoped courses will be held at the training facility sometime before April 2022.

Willmotts' expansion plans will also see them convert their Forked Lift Truck (FLT) fleet to an all-electric one.

Support for this partnership between the transport company and the Council, has been received through the Somerset Business Rates Retention Pilot programme. The aim of the programme is to stimulate and encourage increased economic prosperity in the area, and nationally, through reduced unemployment (and benefit payments), increased personal and corporation tax revenue and increased business rates revenues.

Mendip and neighbouring districts reflect national trends in that there are currently thousands of vacancies for warehouse operatives and FLT drivers.

There is very strong demand and not enough supply for LGV/HGV drivers. This well-documented shortage is disrupting business operations such as waste and recycling refuse collections across Somerset, as well as supermarket deliveries.

Managing Director of Willmotts Transport, Andy Stott, said: "This purpose-built Logistics Training Academy is a great example of a local council and businesses working together. We can promote real opportunity for local people and help them develop the skills that are needed.

"There are high demands to fulfil consumer and international trade needs. Now we can begin to tackle this driver shortage issue in the region, and raise the profile of Mendip and Somerset."

Leader of Mendip District Council, Cllr Ros Wyke, added: "I am delighted that financial support for this innovative project will help the residents of Mendip and the wider community.

"While many are appealing to the government for help, local logistics companies such as Willmotts Transport are doing their bit by enticing people to the industry with the offer of excellent facilities, first-class training and real employment opportunities."
