The news - which had been expected - was released by one of the managers who posted on social media that staff will be returning to Portway Post Office.

The centrally-based post office has been alone in the premises in the Westway since the Co-op store withdrew in June 2021.

At that time it was unclear if the Post Office at the back of the store would remain.

It did continue, and made repeated calls for customers to keep using it, but now it appears dwindling numbers and the increasing cost of running it in terms of electric and rates, have forced a decision.

However on August 17 this was posted on social media: " I wanted to let you all know personally that I have made the decision to withdraw from running Westway post office. When we close on 9 th SEPTEMBER . It will be nearly a year.

Unfortunately the pretty modest customer base has dwindled over the year and the ever increasing utility and business rates commitment is causing concern.

All the staff will return to Portway Post Office so we will be in a good position to staff for the extra customers expected.

Thanks to all those who have supported us to make this year possible including Maybrook properties And Mark Dorrington and team at Frome Town Council ."
