Frome Nub News has noticed that the EV charges in the Market Place car park are now up and running as of January 7.
There had been some delays over who would run the systems, put in by then Mendip council as part of a roll out of stations across the district car parks over the last year.
They are being hosted by Blink, which is a subscription service so you need to sign in to use the system. The American hosted company says to date it has contracted, sold, or deployed nearly 85,000 charging ports worldwide. The EV points had originally expected to be up and operational by last autumn.
Meantime today (January 8) BT said it was planning to try and repurpose up to 60,000 old street side cabinets, into vehicle charging points.
The company is starting in Scotland, with the boxes, usually used to hold cables for broadbands and phones coming to the end of their useful life.
The government says it wants to have 300,000 charge points across the UK by 2030, up from around 50,000 currently but according to the BBC figures show nearly a third of all UK charging points are currently in London and in the regions there are huge EV charging black spots.
