Residents of Lower Innox in Frome complain that they have been plagued by the flies

The problem of flies breeding and then swarming around the Frome sewage works and households on Innox Hill appears to have returned.

The flies have been reported as soon as the weather warmed up last week. The nuisance of swarms of flies in the hotter weather has been a source of complaints against Wessex Water which operate the nearby treatment plant for a long time. Residents contacted Nub News last February to report swarms of flies, whatever the temperatures, meaning they were forced to close windows and not go outside.

Last year there as a trial installation of netting beds over the sewage filter beds, following concerted action by residents and councillors.

However at the most recent Frome Town Council meeting Cllr Adam Boyden told counsellors that the complaints have started again.

He updated the meeting with his report saying : " The netting trial will be reported in June, when another meeting will be held with Wessex Water (which I 3/6 will invite residents to). Since the autumn I have heard few complaints (Wessex Water have received none).

"However, yesterday I was alerted to a video from a resident showing large swarms flies at the tall conifer trees at the northern end of the works, the largest swarm seen this year. I alerted Somerset Council, Wessex Water, and residents in the area, and some have reported flies in their homes. I have advised residents that if the types of flies breeding at the work enter their property, they need to make a complaint."

Complaints need to be made to Wessex Water's complaints line 0345 600 4 6000 (Monday – Friday 8am-6pm) or at https://www.wessexwater.co.uk/help-and-advice/customer-commitments/enquiriesand-complaints - Somerset Council – https://mdc.somerset.gov.uk/make-an-environmental-complaint I am also collating responses and will make a report to both Wessex and the Council.

He added : " We need to keep of this to not let the nuisance build up again, as people should not have to put up with it. "
