Frome flies, local residents say the problem is all year around
Not every resident of Frome will be enjoying the sunshine... although residents in and around Lower Innox say it doesn't actually matter much if the weather is good or bad.
They have told Nub News that whatever the temperatures, they are suffering from nothing less than a plague of flies. And worse, this plague has been on going for years.
The residents have now been in touch with Nub New and engaged a local councillor, Adam Boyden, who like many believed that the issue of flies swarming from the nearby sewage works had been resolved.
Not so, say residents, even with adding chemicals and monitoring and netting Wessex Water have NOT solved the problem.
Cllr Adam Boyden has created a current questionnaire HERE to assess the scale of the problem and will be meeting at the Welshmill sewage works 10am on Monday (February 28).
He told us he wants to know from Wessex Water what they are doing to tackle the fly problem, and considering what residents can do to force greater action (and investment as necessary) at the works.
Frome Nub News reported on the swarming HERE: Nub News in March last year
The blight impacts many residents across Innox Welshmill and Packsaddle areas.
Other councillors and residents have already had meetings with Wessex Water at the Welshmill works in January, and May 2021. Wessex are updating their Fly Management Plan - which is reportedly the ninth version aiming to do something about the problem.
So far over 50 residents have responded to the questionnaire.
The issue seems to be whether the company can cover the open percolating trickle filter beds with nets - although there is no firm guarantee that this will solve the problem.
One of the residents told us: " Wessex water do not feel there is an issue with flies. Frome council accept there have been complaints for decades and the residents have suffered on a daily basis to a point of exhaustion.
"The only day we do not get flies are when there's a hard frost or snowing, the day after the frost or snow has stopped and the sun is out we get flies, so it is pretty much 365 days a year.
"If you come here in the evening and stand by our porches with the lights on you will not be standing there for very long. We have to stay indoors with our doors and windows shut."
Even the campaigners have been driven to stop work.
As they distribute leaflets asking local residents to get involved they told us. " We got mouthfuls of flies... this is the experiences we as residents endure every day. Flies just swarming the the streets."
