Frome Town Football Club has added its backing to an open letter calling on the Football Association to reconsider its recent decision to declare the 2019-20 season null and void.

The decision means there will be no promotion or relegation below the National League North. The same applies in the women's game below the Women's Super League and Championship level.

It is still to be officially ratified by the 118-strong FA Council which met by videolink yesterday (April 7) to discuss the voiding. The 102 voting members are set to vote by email - the threshold for approval is a simple majority - with the result expected by the end of this week.

The letter, co-signed by more than 150 clubs, expresses 'profound concern and displeasure' with the decision to expunge all results for the 2019-20 season at non-league and grassroots level.

It states: "Our concern is grounded primarily in the needless and inexplicable haste exercised in reaching the decision, coupled with a total lack of substantive dialogue or consultation with affected clubs.

"The decision also disregards the millions of pounds invested and countless hours expended collectively by clubs, and so has critical financial implications.

"We urgently seek constructive dialogue with the FA with the aim to have the decision re-considered."

The letter goes on to say it is 'a watershed moment' for the FA and the relationship it chooses to have with non-league and grassroots football.

And concludes: "We urge the FA to reconsider its decision and to slow down the whole process, offering proper consultation with afflicted leagues and clubs as the picture becomes clearer, before deciding a way forward.

"We stand ready to play our full part to help achieve a fair outcome, allowing the integrity of England's football pyramid to be upheld in such a period of national adversity."

The Robins' Football and Operations Director Gary Collinson accused the FA of choosing 'an easy option' following the announcement.

He said: "Unfortunately the Football Association decision that all results are expunged means we are in the same division, leaving the hard work and financial investment unrewarded.

"My bugbear is we (the clubs) were never consulted - but I have to be very careful what I say.

"They've gone for an easy option."

The decision to end the season prematurely has also been challenged in a nine-page letter to the FA from law firm Walker Morris, on behalf of three clubs – South Shields, Worthing and Hastings – who represent a further 148 men's and women's teams, including Frome Town FC.
