Frome planning news this week : Westbury revised incinerator plans are passed
In planning news in and around Frome this week:
Two big decisions made locally this week.
Mendip planners have ruled that there is no objection to application SCC/3795/2021, that is the application for the operation and restoration of Westdown Quarry, including the construction of an upgraded access road. The application (original planning reference 70 - dated 1 November 1947) concerns bringing the quarry, not used for decades, back on line, with Hanson saying it will create 30 new jobs. The revival of the quarry - to supply aggregate which will be used in the High Speed Rail Link, so called HS2 - extends across an area of 54 hectares. Opponents were against the plans because the quarry is alongside Asham Woods, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The application covers the wards of Cranmore, Doulting and Nunney.
In case you missed it, revised plans for an incinerator in Westbury have been passed, although opponents are taking their campaign to appeal to the Secretary of State. The £200m waste-to-energy incinerator, which had been formally opposed by Frome Town Council, sits on the edge of Westbury and is close to the Arla milk plant. The company, which fears that the development will lead to contamination at their works, has promised to continue to fight the plans.
