Frome : Putting its best foot forward into 2021

While the year has been marked by divisions and disagreements at international and national level - what everyone can agree is that 2020 has been quite a year.
The coronavirus pandemic has meant a huge change in how we live our lives, not just in Frome but across a wider Somerset.
But aside from the ravages from coronavirus and the community coming together to fight it, the year has been full of news. Frome Norton Nub News has been proud to be reporting on a hyper local level things that happened in the town - good and bad.
Frome is the biggest town in Mendip - and for many it is also the prettiest. But that lovely beauty (and it has more listed buildings than anywhere else in Somerset ) was slightly tarnished when the centre was shut for development. The work went over time and over budget, and motorists were, in the words of the hugely popular Mayor "cheesed off". It didn't help that other road works were scheduled alongside the Market Place work and that later in the year Network Rail started work on Frome's valued train line and bridges. This led to more closures which are still ongoing.

That said, having the town closed meant a boom for taking the town at a more leisurely pace and the bridge over the river was turned into an al fresco café, with many welcoming the break from cars. Frome is committed to being a zero carbon, low traffic economy, so perhaps it was no surprise that a try out session for E bikes back in the summer, was a huge success. You can read about that HERE: our site
Development and changes coming in 2021? Well one might be the long delayed development of Saxonvale site, bought by Mendip Council in 2018. But that is also causing controversy. Read just one of the many stories Nub News has done on it HERE: our siteThere was sad news for the town too, losing one of its biggest supporters in John Fuller who was involved in all manner of local sporting groups including the rugby and cricket. He was also considered one of the nicest men in Frome.
He is sorely missed. Frome has its characters for sure, from the inspiring and towering Deputy Mayor, to the recycling tin 'king' along and the local naturist. Then there are many unsung heroes who litter pick the streets, campaign to make the Frome River cleaner, and help out the less fortunate. The town's famed community fridge has been not just once, but twice featured on Countryfile. our site Frome is not without its challenges, and that fridge has been vandalised at least twice; as Nub News has reported. But the town is indeed doing things differently and Frome Nub News is very pleased to be part of that story. Here is hoping that 2021 brings health and happiness to everyone in this unique town.
