Frome market re-started today (June 13) with all stall holders working hard to enforce social distancing and many, including the popular Katy's Kitchen vegan and vegetarian stall, only accepting card payments.

The regular stalls were there - including the cheese stall Somerset Deli, the dried fruit and sweet stall, and the pet supplies.

It was clearly a popular decision to re-start the market, with Katy telling Nub News she had run out of some of her stock within an hour of opening.

Katy said: " It is so lovely to be back, I have missed my customers so much."

Mendip District Council announced that Frome, along with the Wells Wednesday market, would be the first to re-open after a complete review of layouts, traders and facilities at each venue was carried out, to ensure the markets meet the latest Government guidelines.

The two markets were identified as best suited to support social distancing guidelines, and traditionally judged to have the highest footfall to generate trade for both the stallholders, and support the local shops.

Wells Market was open on June 10 and also today (June 13) alongside Frome.

As the national restrictions ease, Mendip will be working with stallholders to ensure the markets at Glastonbury, Street and Shepton Mallet begin to open too.

All Mendip Markets were suspended in March due to the coronavirus emergency.

Cllr Nick Cottle, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: "Safety has always been our first consideration, but we are delighted to announce that some markets will be returning to trade next week.

"We know how much our markets have been missed by residents and I look forward to the day when all our traders are out busy lining the streets again with their wonderful displays, first-class goods and excellent banter. They'll be well supported by the people of Mendip.

"These traditional markets bring life into our towns and city - and we want them back."
