The play area at the Old Showfield is Frome - which is the town's largest public play space - looks set to get an upgrade.

But part of the problem, and why the equipment needs renewing, is where it is sited. According details given to the Town Council, and seen by those who use it, like Nub News, due to the shape of the site and ground conditions, this area becomes waterlogged during periods of high rainfall.

The notes to councillors said : " Due to a combination of unusually wet ground conditions, the materials used for the play structures and equipment age, nearly all of the play installations have now been retired – the most popular item, the zip wire was taken out of action this January due to rot in one of the support beams."

The Town Council has been urged to consider a fundamental redesign, including addressing the drainage issues.

The budget for work has been estimated to be around £178k for drainage and for upgrading the play equipment. But there doesn't seem to have been any debate on whether the play area could instead be moved to a less slopping and therefore water pooling area in the Showfield.

The money for the work could be covered by funds directed under the 106 monies which were awarded when the area around Minty's Nursery in Frome (near to Lidl's) is developed on Garston Road. That was agreed in 2016 but it is not clear what has since happened to the money, which which orginally held by Mendip Council which ceased to be on April 1 . 071064/007

That site is nearly 6,000 square feet.
