A Frome singer has featured in a newly formed global choir whose first album has been selected to be profiled on a leading national radio station.

Helen Ostafew sings in the new World Choir for Peace, alongside 23 singers from 16 countries, narrowly managing to return to the UK from Germany where they were recording when lockdown started.

Helen is probably best known in her home town for being MD for My Fair Lady at the Merlin Theatre last year.

She currently teaches singing and piano in Frome and will soon be doing some music sessions with year 3 and 4 children at Trinity School.

The choir's stated aim is :" To bring about a culture of peace through singing together, both as individuals and as part of our choral community, which is growing from project to project.

"We have only one planet and our common aspiration should be to honour it and treat all of its creatures with care. This will help us to have a secure future that is not shaped by heat and drought, by storms and floods, by violence, terror and wars."

Their first album 'Peaceful Choir' has just been chosen as Album of the Week on Classic FM with Alexander Armstrong and every day around 10.15 he is playing a track from the album. Tracks include works from Hans Zimmer, John Rutter, Karl Jenkins alongside a composition by Helen.

The World Choir for Peace was founded by conductor Nicol Matt under the patronage of the German UNESCO Commission in 2018. This marked the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War with

their first concert in Berlin, with 2,000 singers from more than 30 countries. The choir is to be established internationally, in cooperation with the city of Hanover, UNESCO, the UN and the Mayors for Peace organisation.
