The lost Frome swan who has kept the Internet enthralled for days has been safely rescued and taken to the vets.

The swan was first on social media when police officers shooed him off the road at Innox Hill on November 5.

But then there was a lot of speculation about what might be wrong with him to be alone out at this time of the year.

According to a swan rescue centre it is very unusual for a young swan to be alone at the beginning of the winter and it may be that he was on a maiden flight and got lost in Frome.

Today he was safely captured by the local rescue group Cornpop Critter Rescue who took him to the vets.

They posted: " He has lost weight because he has the start of a very bad respiratory infection that could be fatal. " Explaining why he can't just be handed over to another group of swans they said: " If it's a fungus which is common in swans, it is life threatening to all waterfowl."

UPDATED: The swan is doing well, it is being treated for the fungal infection and lice, and will be released back into the wild when he is safe.
