Incredible Frome photo showing troops lined up outside The George, as facade painting completed

The scaffolding has come down outside The George in Frome showing off what is still a beautiful old building in the heart of town.

And as a demonstration of how central to Frome the pub and hotel has been for so long, a photo has been revealed showing troops lining the street outside sometime during the Great War.

The incredible photo - loaned to a Frome resident - shows rows of soldiers outside the pub during the war years, although again it is not clear what year it was taken.

Meantime the front of the building, owned by Wadworth, has been repainted and repointed over recent weeks, with scaffolding to carry out the work meaning just a narrow pavement for pedestrians.

But as you can see from the Frome Nub News photos above (click on the right hand arrow to see) that came down, in a matter of hours on September 16 and the front, which was once a yellowish colour, is now a dazzling white.

The George dates back to 1650 and was renovated in 1874 with the balcony across the front added, as well as some attic rooms.

In November 2020 the Wiltshire brewery company Wadworth sold off 21 of its pubs to the holding company which already operates Butcombe Brewing Co. Those included two in Norton St Philip, the Fleur de Lys and the George Inn. At the time the company announced that it would be selling more pubs, but currently The George is still under the Wiltshire-based ownership.
