Frome Town Council held an extra long Town Matters meeting discussing the proposal to temporarily re-close off King Street in the centre of town to through traffic
Councillors heard that there has been a consultation with businesses and residents on King Street - which is the road towards Marks & Spencers - about re-instating traffic closures.
Although that survey showed the majority of them opposed to re-closing the road, councillors debated whether this was a true reflection of the town's opinion as a whole.
Meantime several councillors maintained that closing ANOTHER road in Frome, after the long town centre closure and the current closure of Rodden Road, would just push Frome motorists too far.
Mayor Anita Collier told the Zoom meeting; " We have put the town's people through a lot, people are really cheesed off. We need residents to be able to take a breath and take some time to breathe out (and be able to drive around the town with ease."
Her view was supported by several councillors including the former Mayor and Cllr John Nelson who told the on line meeting: " People simply don't want want roads closed around town."
Councillors eventually agreed to postpone any decision on temporarily making King Street access only and asked for more consultations. Cllr Scott Ward said that while a full traffic and parking review is on the cards there is a : " Quick fix available, of painting a single yellow line down one side of The Butts. I don't see this as a complete solution.. this isn't a one and done situation, this is just something we can hopefully get done in the next year or so." He told councillors that a complete review of parking, speeding, and cross-town travel is going to take place at Somerset level next year. However there was disappointing news that any proposal for a zebra crossing across the road at the site of the former Weaver pub site, which has been demolished, would never be passed because of the gradient of the road at that point.
