Only yesterday Frome's family-owned independent cinema was hoping it might one of the last to remain open.

But it wasn't to be - and today the Westway told its customers that it was shutting up.

The cinema was originally planning to carry on with just two showings a day until next week and to offer isolation by only selling a seat within two vacant spaces.

But it has now joined the ranks of the bigger chains such as Odeon and Cineworld in closing completely.

Even before the latest coronavirus advice, UK and Ireland box office takings were down 50% across the board - according to Screen Daily.

Yesterday (March 17) when Frome Nub News went to check on the Westway, there were only a handful in the audience at the early afternoon screenings.

If any cinema goers have pre-booked Westway tickets they are being asked to hold on to them so that they can be honoured when the cinema re-opens.
