Two more Somerset councils have announced that all their public meetings have been cancelled until future notice due to the coronavirus.

Somerset County Council and Mendip District Council have both issued statements informing residents that meetings will be suspended or "moved online".

This follows a similar announcement by Sedgemoor District Council – though the county's other two local authorities are still taking things on a case-by-case basis.

County council-run libraries will also be closing, with registration offices being open only by prior appointment.

From Thursday (March 19), most county council buildings will be closed and public meetings and events will be "postponed or moved online".

The council has promised front-line services – such as adult social care, children's care and highway maintenance – will continue as planned.

Chief executive Pat Flaherty said: "This is a fast-moving situation but we have well rehearsed plans and are fully prepared to continue delivering vital services – albeit sometimes in a different way.

"We will, of course, continue to look after the vulnerable and this will be our priority as the situation develops."

A spokeswoman for Mendip District Council said: "Following updated government guidance with regards to the Covid-19 virus, we will now be cancelling meetings until further notice.

"However, everyday/ routine business at the council will continue, but by virtual and technological means.

"We would encourage people to contact us via www.mendip.gov.uk or by calling 0300 303 8588, and not to come into the council offices unless absolutely necessary.

"All visitors to the reception at our Cannards Grave office will be asked to follow hand sanitising procedures.

"Alternative arrangements for democratic processes are being actively considered across the sector, and we will publicise these once we have more information."
