The hugely popular bakery chain Greggs, which has a busy store in the Westway in Frome, has bounced back into profit for the first six months of the year and is planning opening more stores.

But Greggs which will be opening around 100 stores this year says many will be in places like service stations, such as its outlet at the petrol station in Nunney.

The company, which cut around 800 jobs last year, said it was looking to hire 500 staff in the coming months, and has already repaid all money taken from the coronavirus job retention scheme in the first half of the year. It is reviewing whether to repay the total of £90m it has received from the government during the pandemic.

The Newcastle-based business currently operates more than 2,100 stores nationwide and reported a pre tax profit of £55.5 million for the six months to July 3.
