Frome councillors demand public planning scrutiny remains in place for Commerce Park

Since 2009, to allow residents a voice on planning applications in residential boundaries of Commerce Park in Frome, applications would be automatically submitted to Mendip District Council Planning Board for decision.

"This is how planning should be - responsive, listening, community driven," said Mendip Councillor Drew Gardner, Frome College.

On Wednesday at Mendip District Council's Planning Board there was an agenda item to remove this layer of residents' scrutiny, but the recommendation was overturned and the the scrutiny of the local community remains in place.

Councillor Gardner said at the meeting: "You will have seen the detailed letter of objection from Cllr Adam Boyden and myself but I would like to add a few points, as follows:

"1. For the past decade there has been a satisfactory situation where every application for development in relevant areas at Commerce Park has been reviewed by the board.

"2. This is not only giving important peace on mind to the residents but vitally it gives them a voice on developments which could have a significant impact on their life.

"3. Most importantly of all this is something which the entire local community has worked hard to achieve, delivering a situation which is currently working well.

"In my short time as a councillor I have never received a bigger post bag than on this issue.

I and Adam share their concerns on this matter, feel that this proposed change must not and should not go ahead.

"We are not asking for any changes, merely that the status quo, which has worked so well is maintained.

"We ultimately govern for the people and we feel it is vital that they are heard on this. It is imperative that residents continue to have the opportunity to voice their concerns at the Planning Board.

"As the old adage goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
